In the world of craft beverages, you hear a lot of fancy terms tossed around. "Artisanal," "small-batch," and the ever-popular "farm-to-glass." But for us at Hardball Cider, "farm-to-glass" isn't a marketing slogan we slapped on a label to look trendy. It’s a 90-year-old way of life. It’s the dirt under our fingernails, the frost on the branches in October, and the hum of the press that has been part of our family’s heartbeat since 1934.
When you crack open a cold can of our cider, you aren't just drinking fermented juice. You’re tasting the resilience of a 5th generation Pennsylvania orchard. From the moment a bud breaks on an apple tree in Mount Bethel to the second that crisp, luscious liquid hits your glass, every single step happens right here on our soil.
This is what it actually looks like to be one of the premier farm wineries in PA, and why the "farm-to-glass" journey is the only way we know how to play the game.
The Roots: Five Generations of Grit
Our story didn't start with a business plan; it started with a duty to the land. The farm has been in our family since the early 1930s. We’ve been growing and pressing apples for over 75 years, long before anyone called it "craft."
I think back to the mid-1950s, when my grandfather, Vernon Mack (pictured in our archives holding his granddaughter Candae), decided it was time to double down. He expanded our orchard acreage, planting the very trees that would eventually feed our modern vision. He didn't do it because it was easy: he did it because hard work was the only currency that mattered.
Years later, while riding a MARTA train in Atlanta, I (Geoff Deen) realized that our family’s heritage was the perfect foundation for something new. We took that 75-year tradition of sweet cider and "kicked it into high gear" to create Hardball Cider. We combined our love for the farm with our passion for the game, creating a craft cider brand that respects the past while swinging for the fences.
Step 1: The Orchard (Where the Magic Grows)

Most mass-produced ciders you find on grocery store shelves start in a lab or a shipping container. They use apple concentrate, artificial flavors, and "natural" dyes to mimic the taste of fruit. We think that’s a foul ball.
At Hardball Cider, the process starts with a walk through the trees. We are apple experts first and cidermakers second. We don't use concentrates. Period. Every bottle of our cider contains the juice of approximately seven locally grown apples. When we say it’s fresh-pressed, we mean those apples were hanging on a branch just days: or even hours: before they were crushed.
Growing our own fruit allows us to control the quality from the very first sprout. We manage the soil, we watch the weather, and we pick at the peak of ripeness (shown above). This commitment to our local hard cider near me philosophy ensures that the base of every drink is as pure as the Pennsylvania air.
Step 2: The Press (Pressed Against the Odds)
Once the harvest is in, we move to the press. We use traditional rack-and-cloth press methods. It’s a slower, more labor-intensive process than the high-speed industrial centrifuges used by the big guys. It’s a labor of love that requires a bit of muscle and a lot of patience, but it’s how we extract nearly 75% of the juice while keeping all those complex, buttery, and tart flavors intact.
This "raw cider base" is the soul of our product. We don't filter the life out of it. We let the character of the fruit shine through. As we like to say, our cider is "grown locally, pressed against the odds, and (like our apples) hardened over time."
Step 3: Fermentation and the Brite Tank

After pressing, the juice heads to our fermentation room (pictured above). This is where the "hardening" happens. We use a precise, tree-to-brite-tank-to-glass pipeline that stays entirely under our roof.
The juice is fermented until the sugars convert into that crisp, refreshing alcohol we all love. From there, it moves into our brite tanks for clarification and carbonation. This is also where we get creative. We blend our raw cider with real, seasonal fruits: no artificial junk allowed. Whether it’s a summer berry blend or a spiced fall favorite, if it’s in the glass, it came from the earth.
This vertical integration is rare. Most "local" ciders are actually made at large co-packing facilities miles away from the farm. By keeping everything on-site, we ensure that the final product meets the "highest standards" we’ve held for five generations.
Step 4: The Glass (The Ultimate Orchard Experience)

The final leg of the journey is the best part: the pour. When you visit our farm in Mount Bethel, you aren't just going to a bar. You’re stepping into the working orchard where it all began.
You can grab a flight of our latest drink line-up, find a spot at a picnic table by the pond, and listen to live music while the sun sets over the very trees that produced your drink. It’s an authentic Pennsylvania experience that you just can't manufacture in a city taproom.
We love seeing our pals and neighbors come out for our events, whether it’s for a food truck rally or a chill afternoon by the water. Seeing the 5th generation of our family: like my sister Jennifer: working the farm and serving the community is a reminder that while the world changes, our commitment to this land never does.
Why Real "Farm-to-Glass" Matters
So, why go through all this trouble? Why maintain a 5th generation orchard when we could just buy juice from a supplier?
- Complexity: Real apples have character. Mass-produced ciders are often one-note and sugary. Ours have the tannins, acidity, and body that only come from real fruit.
- Transparency: You can literally see where your drink came from. There are no secrets here: just trees, tanks, and a lot of hard work.
- Community: When you support Hardball, you’re supporting a century-old family farm. You’re keeping Pennsylvania agriculture alive and thriving.
- Taste: Honestly? It just tastes better. There’s a "fresh-pressed" vibrance that you can't fake.
